Residents of Kariba and Binga have taken the Zimbabwean government to the High Court, demanding the restoration of safe and reliable ferry services across Lake Kariba following the Mbuya Nehanda ferry disaster.
The urgent application was filed in Chinhoyi on 25 September 2026 by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), representing residents Tonderai Ndevani and Chilumbo Mudenda.
Although a privately operated ferry has been introduced, the applicants argue that it is not enough to meet the needs of communities that rely on the lake crossing for travel, trade, family connections and essential services.
They want the court to order the responsible government authorities to provide adequate ferries that meet safety requirements within one month and to report regularly on progress.
The residents argue that the continued disruption affects their constitutional rights, including freedom of movement and human dignity.
The High Court has yet to determine the application.
